CSI was founded in March 1948 by the specification writers of government agencies who came together to improve the quality of construction specifications. MasterFormat® is a master list of numbers and titles developed by CSI to organize and standardize construction documents for commercial, industrial, and institutional building projects in the U.S. and Canada.
For many years, MasterFormat® consisted of 16 Divisions (Electrical, Mechanical, Masonry, etc.) until a major change in 2004 expanded the number of Divisions to 50, reflecting the growing complexity of the construction industry. Each specification includes information on required submittal data, quality assurance requirements, storage and handling, standards, and installation information.
